An easy way to do this is using metaphor. You have one example of a typical forgiveness metaphor at the beginning of this chapter. Another metaphor comes from Gandhi. He said, âAnger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.â This is a powerful statement when a client stops to really consider its implications.
I have found in my own practice that some of the most powerful metaphors for clients come out of neuroscience. Clients really enjoy learning about the brain and how to use it more efficiently. This type of metaphor is ideal when clients really struggle with the idea of forgiveness, as explaining the research about how forgiveness affects the brain makes the process completely about the client.
